My Coverdell Fellowship at Fordham University has provided me the opportunity to work as an intern with the Office of The Bronx Borough President. My internship is with the Policy Department where I do a multitude of tasks regarding local policy, all-the-while receiving valuable direction and training from the Policy Director and other local government employees. The work day consists of researching current events and specific policies that may affect the Bronx and New York City, and also meeting with community members about different issues. I am then expected to write up reports, memos, and other deliverables that are reviewed and used for the purpose of the Office of the Bronx Borough President.
The Office of The Bronx Borough President heads local initiatives for economic, social, and environmental wellbeing. The Office also works with the mayor, city council, New York State government, public agencies, community groups, and private enterprise to make the Bronx Borough a better place for everyone.
Highlights of my internship with The Office of the Bronx Borough President include working on the report for preferential rent – which was published and presented by the Bronx Borough President; presenting to the Bronx Borough President regarding policy options and research; and writing and editing letters that have been released to the public. All of these activities, and the guidance that I have received from my supervisors, have given me an invaluable experience of working at the local government level. The education I am engaged in at IPED allows me to apply political economy concepts and abilities to the work at hand and make me someone in the room with plenty to contribute.
