Reflecting on my two-month journey in Montpellier, France, I am nostalgic and grateful. This city in southern France was my home from July to August. I was there to immerse myself in the French language and culture at Alliance Française, and I must say, it exceeded my expectations in every way.
When I arrived on a Sunday afternoon, I knew I was in for a treat. The city was quiet, with a hint of excitement in the air. I soon discovered that Sundays in France are a day of relaxation and rejuvenation, and I happily embraced this philosophy during my stay.
My language learning journey at Alliance Française de Montpellier was rewarding. I was surrounded by fellow learners worldwide, and our shared passion for French created a sense of camaraderie that made the experience even more enjoyable. My instructors were patient, knowledgeable, and encouraging, and I appreciated the emphasis on conversational French.
Of course, no stay in France would be complete without indulging in the local cuisine! I experienced the delicious world of macarons, cheeses, and chocolates. I sampled through the city’s patisseries and fromageries, determined to try every flavor combination possible. It was worth the hype!
One of the highlights of my stay was visiting the Musée Fabre, a stunning art museum that showcased an impressive collection of European art. The building was a work of art, with beautiful gardens and a serene atmosphere inviting contemplation.
But what truly made my stay in Montpellier unforgettable was the people. The locals were warm and welcoming, and I appreciated their willingness to engage in conversation and help me practice my French. I also enjoyed meeting fellow travelers and expats who shared their stories and insights about France.
My train experiences were another highlight of my stay. I marveled at the efficiency and comfort of the French rail system. I enjoyed exploring the surrounding regions, such as Carcassonne’s medieval village and the Côte d’Azur’s beautiful beaches.
As a South African from Johannesburg, I was struck by the differences in weather between our two countries. Montpellier’s Mediterranean climate was a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of Joburg, and I reveled in the long, sunny days and balmy evenings.
I consciously tried to apply my French language skills daily throughout my stay. Whether ordering food at a café, asking for directions, or conversing with locals, I was determined to put my language learning into practice. And what a thrill it was to see my hard work pay off! I went from an A1 level to an A2 level in 5 weeks.
Reflecting on my time in Montpellier, I am grateful for the experiences, people, and memories that made my stay unforgettable. France, you have stolen my heart.
