Pope Francis Meets Fordham IPED Director


Saturday, October 23, 2021, Apostolic Palace, Vatican City — Pope Francis greeted Professor Henry Schwalbenberg, the Director of Fordham University’s Graduate Program in International Political Economy and Development. Dr. Schwalbenberg had traveled to Rome to attend an international conference at the Vatican on “Solidarity, Cooperation and Responsibility.”  While there he had the opportunity to share the 2021 results of Fordham’s Pope Francis Global Poverty Index with Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle (Fordham PhD Honoris Causa, ’14) who is the president of Caritas Internationalis, the relief and development arm of the Catholic Church, and with Cardinal Michael Czerny, SJ, the Pope’s point person on international migration issues.  


On his return from Rome, Dr. Schwalbenberg stopped by Catholic University to present his results on measuring integral human development using Fordham’s Pope Francis Global Poverty Index as well as meeting with a number of IPED alumni in the DC area.
