Washington Career Trip ’08

Our students spent Thursday morning, November 6th, at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). We are very thankful for the excellent briefing we received from the staff of the Bureau for Legislative and Public Affairs.

Following our briefing we were off to lunch at the Elephant and Castle Restaurant where we also were able to meet up with some of our DC alumni.

In the afternoon we next visited the US International Trade Administration at the Department of Commerce.

Several of our alumni at Commerce introduced us to their work regarding US international trade policy and US foriegn investment policy.

After returning to our hotel for a short rest we then went to Marty’s Bar and Grill where we were able to socialize with a number of our DC alums.

On Friday morning, November 7th, we received another excellent presentation at the US Foreign Agricultural Service.  We also met one of our alums who was busy working on issues related to the US Free Trade Agreement with Central America and the Dominican Republic.

Following our presentation and lunch at the Department of Agriculture, we then proceeded to Capitol Hill.  On Capitol Hill we were the guests of Congressman Peter Hoekstra (R-Michigan), who is the ranking member of House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

We are particularly thankful to the Congressman’s staff, who not only gave us an insightful introduction to careers in intelligence and diplomacy, but also a wonderful tour of the Capitol.

Special thanks to Mr. Gabriel Vergara for coordinating our trip.
