Philippine Study Tour

COMMUNITY DRIVEN DEVELOPMENT and PROJECT ASSESSMENT were the key themes of our winter intersession study tour of the Philippines.  Our host was the Economics Department of the Ateneo de Manila University.

FIELD ASSESSMENTS

On the island of San Salvador in the western Luzon province of Zambales our students conducted field surveys of a mangrove reforestation project and an eco tourism project.  In the central Luzon province of Nueva Ecija our students observed a micro hydroelectric power project and  the functioning of a women’s cooperative. We are indebted to the Office of Social Concerns and Issues at the Ateneo de Manila University for making our site visits a reality.

CLASSROOM PREPARATION AT THE ATENEO DE MANILA

Prior to conducting their field site visits, our students received intensive training in project assessment, cross cultural communication as well as an introduction to the Philippines. We are very thankful to the Ateneo de Manila University for providing us access to their faculty and classrooms.  We also need to thank the Instiute for Social Order for allowing us to use their dormitories and cafeteria.
